Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show @ Coronation Hall
Feb 25 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show @ Coronation Hall

Hambledon Productions presents…Just Like That! – The Tommy Cooper Show: Saturday 25 February – 7.30pm: £13 / £12 Concessions

Tommy Cooper was a true comic genius. His impeccable timing, misfiring magic, trademark fez and quick-fire gags made him an international star and a true icon of the 20th Century. Now, 30 years since his untimely passing, the appetite for his surreal slapstick, classic routines and snappy one-liners, continues to be re-discovered by old and new fans alike.

“Just Like That!” embarks on a new nationwide tour after sell-out successes at the West End’s Museum of Comedy. This all-encapsulating show features John Hewer (Tony Hancock, Hancock’s Half Hour – The ‘Lost’ Episodes) giving “a perfect illusion of time travel” (The Lost Review) and delivering “nuances both obvious and subtle” (TmeOut) as the man in the fez.

The show, first produced in 2014 to mark 30 years since the comedian’s untimely passing, has enjoyed enormous success nationwide and features classic favourites such as “spoon-jar”, “bottle-glass” and the hilarious “Hats” routine, combined with hidden gems and bumbling magic from Cooper’s extensive back catalogue.

John Hewer “captures the Cooper style, from the mumbled speech and loud laughter to the awkward giant-body language” (The Stage) as he brings Cooper back to life in this family-friendly show that’s a must for all generations of knockabout comedy.

For die-hard Cooper fans, it’s the chance to relive those memories and join in the groan-worthy gags and famous routines (plus plenty of lesser-known surprises and belly laughs!) For others, it’s a perfect evening of music-hall inspired entertainment that’ll have you rolling in the aisles – jus’-like-that!

Complete with live musical accompaniment, this highly acclaimed tribute show is “a loving ode to a comic oddball” (Beyond The Joke) and is the perfect celebration of Britain’s favourite comedian.

“If you fancy a trip down memory lane, then it’s ticket, money, money, ticket – just like that!” – Chortle

LOGISTICS (HOSPITAL RECORDS)
Signing exclusively to Hospital in 2004, Logistics worked solidly on creating masterpieces such as “Together”, “Spacejam”, ”The Trip” and “Release The Pressure”. Logistics quickly became known for bridging the gap between liquid funk, which, until then had often been a lacklustre sub-genre and a more exciting, dance floor orientated variety of Drum + Bass. It’s Logistics’ influence that has been picked up by the major DJs in the scene such as Andy C and Friction, and his anthemic creations have contributed greatly to the modern Hospital sound.

Logistics’ debut LP “Now More Than Ever“ was released in the autumn of 2006; a hugely ambitious project, restraining no less than 24 speaker busting tunes beneath its calm exterior and soon became known as a classic. In 2007 Logistics also submitted his “Medical History” and 18 months on, having scooped “Best Album” at the 1xtra Bass awards for his debut album, Logistics dropped his second long player “Reality Checkpoint“. Rammed full of genre-bending goodness it was heralded as a glimpse of the future with dubstep and electronica influences fusing together with the anthemic Logistics sound.

2008 saw the Luke Skywalker of the ”Future Sound Of Cambridge” drop the massive track “Cosmonaut” and feature on several awesome collabs with Commix and brother Nu:Tone, keeping sub basses across the land pounding for the rest of the year. Having been locked away deep in the Degobah system making tracks, 2009 was time for Logistics to unleash the full power of the force with the onomatopeic “Crash Bang Wallop“, smacking dancefloors and stereos hard.

In 2012 Logistics returned to the studio, producing both under Logistics and his Nu:Logic moniker with brother Nu:Tone. April 2012 saw the release of ‘Fear Not’ an arguably more cohesive and ambitious than his previous efforts, covering a variety of tempos and styles. Later, the sum of brotherly combined powers led to LP’s ‘Morning Light’ and ‘Everlasting Days’ that showcase a nebula of new sounds and techniques. Similarly, their album ‘What I’ve Always Waited For’ oozes the kind of soulful Drum and Bass that harks back to the foundation of the Hospital label.

The Importance of Being Earnest @ Coronation Hall
Mar 21 @ 7:30 pm – Mar 25 @ 10:00 pm
The Importance of Being Earnest @ Coronation Hall

The Importance of Being Earnest is the most renowned of Oscar Wilde’s comedies. It’s the story of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. The elaborate plot ridicules Victorian sensibilities with some of the best loved, and indeed bizarre, charactersto be found on the modern stage. Wilde originally wrote it in four acts, but during the first rehearsals George Alexander persuaded him to shorten it down to three.

A variety of walks and walking events in and around Ulverston, guided by knowledgeable local people.

We are pleased to say what a successful 2016 walkFest was from both the walks point of view and the Celebrity Speaker event with Joss Naylor.

We quickly sold out of tickets for the capacity of the Supper Room at The Coro and transferred to the Main Hall which was also a sell-out. From the proceeds of the raffle £175 was donated on the evening to Jigsaw Children’s Cancer Charity, Joss’s nominated raffle charity and, because the evening was such a success financially, a donation from the profits of £100 was also later given to the charity.

The main charity for the evening was The Brathay Trust. Joss did not wish to charge a fee nor to take expenses but instead asked for the walkfest to make a donation to this worthwhile charity which is very close to his heart. As a result, £500 was donated to the charity.

Dave Crossley, festival organiser: “A vision arose of an Ulverston awash with music, live art, dancing and laughter, talent spilling forth from every corner, colour shining out from every crevice, and fine sounds gracing the ears from every joint in town. This cobbled beauty of the North was made to host such a celebration and the foundations were being laid to make it happen”… “with the assistance and generosity of a cornucopia of the most magical and talented souls from Furness and beyond, Another Fine Fest became a living, breathing, bouncing, heartbeat increasing reality”.

Jackson Sloan and the Rhythmtones @ Coronation Hall

Jackson Sloan and the Rhythmtones will be opening the Retro Rendezvous festival on Friday night at the Coro.

Jackson Sloan, over the years, has built up a reputation as an exceptionally talented and gifted frontman. Jackson’s love of the music evolved from his parents record collection which led to Jackson attending live gigs both in his own home town of Southend-on-Sea, all over Essex, London and Europe.

“The 100 Club, London was my spiritual home, where I could get up close to my heros, the great blues shouters, Jimmy Witherspoon, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Jay Mcshann, Memphis Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Big Joe Williams. Along with becoming a record collector, this became my passion to try to emulate these great musicians and voices, I got to meet the musicians and talk to them personally – I felt very priveleged”

In 1982 Jackson formed ‘Rent Party’, a jump jive rhythm blues band playing the sounds of Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Liggins and Wynonie Harris, along with the Chevalier Brothers they helped pioneer the jump sounds both in the UK and in Europe. Rent Party held a weekly residency at the railway hotel and the queens hotel in Southend-on-Sea, packing out these two iconic venues led to an agency deal in London. Rent Party then became one of the best live acts around. Numerous tours led to the band being invited by George Wein to play the Kool Festival in New York and three nights at top Roots music venue, the Lone Star in Greenwich village. Rent Party released four singles and one live album on waterfront records culminating in working with top blues producer Mike Vernon.

“Working with Mike Vernon was a real pleasure, we recorded four tracks live an an old church hall using a fostex 16 track – Mike did a terrific job, that really helped promote the band.” After Rent Party folded and went separate ways in the roots music word Jackson teamed up with ex-Rent Party musicians and formed seven piece rhythmn blues band Oobopshbam playing and touring all over the Uk and Europe recording a studio and live album.

Jackson had a conversation with good friend Ray Gelato which led to recording a solo album. “Ray encouraged me to write original songs and record in a way that the classic records of Atlantic, Federal, Imperial and speciality had a great live feel. After getting together in London with Ray Gelato and his great pianist Gunter Kurmeyer, they started putting together the songs. They brought in a top doublebass player Peter Pritchard who’s worked with Scotty Moore, Eric Clapton and Alvin Lee. Guitar duties fell to Richard Studholme whos played with Hubert Sumlin Big Jay McNeely Lowell Fulson, Carey Bell, Eric Bibb and many more. On drums Mike Thorne one of the best Rhythmn blues drummers in the Uk who also produced the recording at his vintage studios Rimshot.

Jackson Sloan’s new CD – ‘The Shack Sessions’ on Shellac records has put together Jackson’s love of jump blues, RNB, Rock n Roll, Boogie Woogie and Jive.
