Hartleys Brewery

Hartleys Brewery and its tall chimney was a feature of Ulverston until 1991, when brewing operations stopped at the site. The buildings continued to be used as storage for a while, and the redundant chimney was demolished. Now, the site is deserted, and is awaiting re-development.

There were numerous Hartleys pubs in Ulverston, such as the Canal Tavern, Cattle Market, Globe, Hope & Anchor, Kings Arms, Old Friends, Piel Castle, Red Lion, Rose & Crown, Swan, and Union Vaults, many of which are now gone. Hartleys beer mats were used to advertise the beer, as well as for public health messages, information about local celebrities, etc. The beer mats shown above include features on John Ruskin, George Romney, Stan Laurel, Sir John Barrow, healthy foods, and drink driving.
